I put a complete rear subframe from a 1989 560SEL in my 1987 SDL. Used the SDL drive shaft. Everything bolted up. Still have to change the gear in
the speedometer to correct reading.

I do not recommend Continental belts. Bought one here and one at the dealer. First one started coming apart at the edge, second one split into two belts. Both had under 5000 miles. Getting better...

You may be calling a chain guide ("held in with two pins") a tensioner.

Remove vac pump, it pulls on the chain and makes work...

Unplug the electronic idle control at the end of the injection pump to test its function. Engine should go to a stable low idle. Fuel line air leak or clogged filter(s) can also be the cause.

My 1991, CIS, M104 passed NJ emissions test by running on 45% alchol. Then found the reason for the failure, the cats were empty because of age. Replaced them.
