Yes. In my case the pump itself was leaking...your symptoms sound the same as mine. I was able to source a reman pump for just over $500 a year ago.

That's frustrating. I would ask some of the tuners out there if there's anything they can think of. To tune that ECU you have to remove it and replace some chips...i.e. can't be done from OBD2 port.

A basic OB2 code reader will tell you which plug if it's a bad plug. That's what's most likely. However, controllers do go bad...on one of mine it went bad around 140k miles.

Running on five glow plugs is fine. I did it for about a year and a half on 98 E300 until I had to pass inspection. This is in New England so it gets pretty cold.
