Injector pump timing
I need to know the correct method for setting the initial injector pump timing when installing a new timing chain on a 1984 2.2 190D Serial # 601.921.12.001571. The manuals I have read show timing marks for the cam and crank but no mention of the injector pump. It has become my mission in life to learn and assemble this engine correctly. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm guessing since it's a 60x engine there is a RIV port on the side of the IP. If so, then the easy way to set IP timing is to borrow an A-B timing light and use it to set base IP timing. The A-B light reads a lug that turns with the main shaft of the IP. At a certain lug position, both LEDs in the A-B light illuminate. Set the crank to the desired reference setting (14* ATDC for most 60x engines) then asjust the IP until both LEDs illuminate.
You can do it by feel using a small rod to determine the position of the lug or visually using a mirror to view the lug. That should get you close enough. If you have an IP locking tool, you can use either of the rough methods to get the IP close, put the locking tool in place, then turn the adjuster until the locking tool snaps locked. It'll be the head of a bolt that takes a 17mm socket below the stop lever.

OK, I have the engine back together and I cannot get it to start. It will crank and smoke but not fire. I tried to set the injector timing by the mark in the access plug but I'm not very sure it is right. I noticed the injector pump "pulses" fuel to the number one injector once every 180 degrees of rotation. I may be 180 out. The method I used to "set" the timing was visually setting the IP mark and setting the crank @ 12 degrees atdc. Any help would be appreciated. I am going to figure this thing out although I do miss the old Detroits and Cats sometimes.
Would this tool help? I see this tool is similar to the tool above. Further reading states the tool I pictured has to be used with the engine idling to fine tune the IP timing. ACK Last edited by Dubyagee; 10-03-2009 at 08:32 AM. |

It should fire once every 720 crank degrees.
Set the IP so the lug is aligned with the opening then pull the valve cover and check that it's just past combustion TDC. The cam alignment mark should still be visible. Spec is closer to 14 ATDC. That's precisely the tool to use. Sixto 93 300SD |

I should mention that there's a simpler tool that uses a similar inductor to illuminate LEDs. It's more precise than peering into the RIV port through a mirror or tapping a dowel into the port to see if the impression of the lug is centered.

OK, She fired for a few but I have alot of vacuum hoses to tend with and the number four injector is mad at me (little fuel coming out when cracked open). I'm gonna finalize the vac hose routing and see where that gets me. That burned diesel smell in my clothes takes me back to my diesel mechanic days.
