Manual trans oil change?
Searched and didn't turn up much.
What's the dino lube of choice? Planning on doing that and the rear diff tomorrow evening.

I'm assuming you're asking about your 220D. There has been some discussion on the correct lube, mostly related to 240D's which are a bit newer. The general consensus with those transmissions is to use Dexron III, though there are a few people out there using light grades of motor oil. I use Dexron myself and have been for quite some time with good results.

Some of them used 10w30 motor oil about that time, before that it was gear lube which was about equivalent to straight 30w.

It's kinda like talking about the choice of religion. I use Redline synthetic MTL in my 240D.

I'd strongly suggest finding out what the factory originally recommended. I had a W123 that a PO had put gear oil in. It ground on all shifts. The manual said to use ATF, and I went to several supposed Mercedes mechanics who insisted gear oil would work better. I finally got ATF installed, and all the grinding and poor shifting immediately went away.

Merecedes-Benz still insist on the obsolete ATF Type A Suffix A (MB 236.2 specification) for all mechanical trannies up to mid 1990-ies.

I have seen also owner`s manuals suggesting SAE 20w-20,10w-30 motor oils,but never seen anything newer than Dexron IID (?) Seems like MTL`s(MTF) do the job well-I`d go for an ATF-like viscosity MTL intstead of a modern ATF... |

If you insist on going by the book, I think I have vintage quart of 20 year old Type A that I got at the hazardous waste facility (dump) that I would part with for $20 shipped
. Just use synthetic- your gearbox will thank you for it. You can't get what they recommended anymore, and why would you use it anyway when there is much better stuff out there? That would be like looking for SAE CC engine oil because that was what the book said when it was printed... Rick
