My 2 tank SVO conversion

Here are some pictures of my 2 tank SVO conversion. To provide heat for the oil I am using an in tank heat exchanger, Hose in Hose (3/8 inch copper for oil surrounded by 3/4 inch hose for coolant), 16 plate heat exchanger, and a large filter with a coil of coolant hose surrounding it. Currently I am getting 145 F before the lift pump. I plan to add a valve to allow me to loop the oil return rather than sending it back to the tank. This should raise my oil temperature to around 160 F. Purge times are about 2 blocks.

First pictures: Fuel and coolant diagram, 16 plate heat exchanger, Hose in hose fittings, and the in tank heat exchanger.

I used a path for all of the extra lines that did not require drilling. The only holes I had to drill for this conversion were 2 behind the ash tray to mount the gauges (in a picture below) and one to mount my filter to the inner fender. I used existing holes for the rest of the installation.

You can barely see the Flat plate heat exchanger under the cruise control actuator. I mounted the first 6 port valve above the heat exchanger and the second one near the dip stick. I made sure that the fuel lines that have both fuels running through them were as short as possible for a fast purge. The oil filter is next to the windshield washer reservoir. I used a reservoir from a 300D to replace the huge and cracked one that was in the car.

The line from the heat exchanger to the second 6 port valve runs along the valve cover for warmth. All other oil lines run near coolant lines to keep them warm.

Thumbs up

That is a very professonal looking job. And on a 240 stick it's even better.
Are you actually running on SVO not WVO?

Any pics of the car itself?

Beautiful installation, friend!

I'm somewhat surprised that your temps aren't any higher than they are. You should be getting hotter than that with what you've got.

Me too. I think I need to try going for a longer drive. I think what was happening is the filter is holding allot of cooler oil that is replaced with much warmer from the HIH as I drive. After I drive awhile and pump all of the cooler oil out of the filter and it refills with the warmer oil I hope to have better temperatures. If not I will try the loop. I haven't had much time to play with it since finishing it up.

nice!
Maybe if you switch the FPHE to be the last item before the IP you'll get more heat.
Did you go w/ 2 6 ports to keep the LP pushing instead of sucking?

Looks great! I have been looking over all (most) available kits out there. Is yours a kit or a complete DIY gathering your own components?

Some of the nicer ones out there are very expensive (baffled tanks, nice electronics, etc) and use electric heating devices that can tap a poor 240D alternator dry. I am trying to avoid the electric heating thing if possible.
