I would question why you would bother !
IMHO Toyota does not know how to build small diesels and have had serious problems with them !
I would recommend an ML 270 CDI over a Toyota Landcruiser any day. If they are available in Canada, worth importing.
I have one in Oz and it is brilliant !
Apparently the new ML 320 CDI is even better.
By the way, I used to own a petrol Landcruiser 100 series and hated its handling.

swap the drive line but by no means do you want to touch the VIN numbers.

sounds like its a lot easier than going the other way.US customs require proper clearance on any car leaving the US.thats the 1st step.then you have to deal with canada customs,paperwork,taxes and duties.i would like to acquire a rustfree 116 chassis from the south btu i dont like a lot of hassle

You can buy anything you want in Canada and bring it down here. You just have to know the "right" people. This guy has done it many many times.
Pick your diesel on eBay and give him a call. He'll tell you all the ins and outs.

There's a guy who is about 2 hours North of me, right along the Candian border who always has JDM diesel Land Cruisers on ebay. All of them have Washington State Titles, so this guy seems to know how to do it.

Ive just ran into someone on the TDIclub forum who imported a 2006 Hyundai santa fe CRDi diesel. from where? im not sure where but he has it in LA, california of course. Im assuming it might be from guatemala since they are the ones with diesels. Mexico ruled out diesels years ago.

He said its in euro spec which guatemala european vehicles are in. The place i stayed at in guatemala had a rich neighbor who had a 300SD in euro spec. He said it gets better mileage then a Ford escape hybrid in real world driving. Ive seen one over in guatemala and was thinking of getting one but finding out how much work is needed to import one legally i knew it was just going to be a dream.

But im not sure how he has it here.

25yrs is to import anything to the USA. Except canadian designated market vehicle, they have exemption,

If the vehicle was a Canadian designated vehicle you can bring it in to the USA with simple importing, diesel or not.

You see in Canada our rule is 15yrs, so we are bring in lots of Japan designated market diesels. (land cruiser etc)

If you want a diesel truck(toyota) from Canada it has to be when had diesels and the last year was in 88-or 89......I'm forgeting.

I know tonnes of guys who have bought diesel cruiser from the 80's and brought them to the USA. WHY? Cause the USA never ever got a a diesel land cruiser. SO you import them.

The diesel inline 6 mentioned above is a 1hz engine. Iindirect injected non turbo diesel. The turbo version is the 1HD-t.

You can buy the engines to install in a project for down in the usa.
