blower motor repair
So, my wife's blower motor went out in her W116.
After verrifying that the blower motor (and not some other part of the HVAC) was indeed broken, I checked fastlane. $904 with the cage, $345 without. Since I there was no harm in doing so, I dissasembled it to find worn out brushes. Tommorow when I go to the hardware store, it will be fixed for $10. Behr and Bosch can do some stuff that isn't appropriate for this forum. |

I have fixed W123 blower motors with appliance brushes, they wont last as long but so what, just put in another pair

I ordered online a new motor (no core) from DriveWire. Cost $114.70 and free shipping to my door. Supporting the cage between two stacks of books, allowing the motor to dangle in the space between the books, a couple of sharp strikes with a punch and hammer on the motor shaft freed the cage from the motor. |

Got the brushes yesterday. I couldn't find the right size local, so I had to order them. Helwig Carbon makes them and the part number is 82-313111, they come in packs of four. They are 0.312" x 0.312" x 1", but you will need to shorten them to reassemble the motor. I got them from graphitestore.com and with Thanksgiving it ended up taking exactly one week for them to ship, but I don't blame them. The motor works!
EDIT- But graphitestore.com will only sell them to you eight at a time. |

I took my extra apart last night, trying to get one to go into the 240. On mine, I pulled the plastic "body" of the fan assembly off, leaving the motor can and squirrel cage. I then set it on vice, motor down, with cage resting on a block on both sides. Tapped motor shaft with punch, basically driving motor and shaft from squirrel cage.
I don't know about yours, but my motor can was not held in place with screws, but the can "lids" had tabs, 3 of them, and the corners were folded with a punch to overlap the can. Hard to visualize, pics maybe to follow. I didn't have but about 6mm left on the brushes, but am letting it ride at this time. My problem was the tightness of the shaft in the bushings on both ends. Went into "fan repair mode" and got those freed up, cleaned and lubed. When reinstalling the motor end, some of the punched and folded corners grabbed, some broke off. We'll see if it holds...... Are all the motor cans/cases like this? Spins very freely now......

I have a 126 300SD 1982, and the blower finally works well with the newly polished fuse holder and fuse. HOWEVER, it squeaks! Help. how hard is it to remove and lubricate the motor? can it be done? are the squeaks permanent? I plan to practice on my 83SD parts car. post a link to a DIY or Pictorial hopefully if there is one.

I have not had to do anything on mine, yet. But, that squeak sounds like dry bearings.

Ummm, see post #6 above....... I also find it handy to use gun cleaning kits with the tubular brushes just slightly larger than the fan bushing you are cleaning. Then I buff with scotchbrite and lube with Zoom Spout oil (available from most hardware stores) http://www.happcontrols.com/cleaning_maintenance/29103300.htm http://www.zoomspoutoiler.com/ Trust a fan guy on this one..... The absolute best stuff to use is Royal Purple, iso 68 I believe (equivalent to about 15wt). No debate will be allowed on this point! **edit** You must disassemble fan/can to clean and lube the bushings and armature shaft. Proper metal or fiber washers is very important also. Armature should have a little play up and down, but not a big gap, and certainly not snug.

thanks fan guy...
where would the "proper washers" and such be aquired? and what do I do about excessive play? also, I, being an a/c tech, have the zoom oil in my tool box, but with a/c motors there is a tube and resivoir to hold oil, I did not see any such in the pictures above. is cleaning and oiling going to be sufficient? I would think that cleaning and lubing with a pasty grease would be more long life... buy you being the fan guy should be the final word. John
