I have been saying this for some time now. I always use Lucas Fuel treatment and Diesel Kleen in my car. I get MUCH better milage ~4-5mpg than when I do without them.

I have been saying this for some time now. I always use Lucas Fuel treatment and Diesel Kleen in my car. I get MUCH better milage ~4-5mpg than when I do without them.

While this was true to a point for a while, it was a function of allowable sulfur and how refiners aligned blend pools and stocks to maximize profit. With ULSD, fuel quality has increased. The reason why is that the aromatic-bound sulfurs, generally benzothiophene type molecules, are very difficult to process.

We use hydrodesulfurization to upgrade diesel cut fuel stocks to be ultra-low sulfur. This involves high temperature and high pressure hydrogen being reacted. The issue is that the reaction is not selective to the sulfur species, and so the reaction tends to open aromatic rings and force reconstruction of the compounds before the sulfur is accessible and reacted.

The byproduct is a better fuel with less aromatics (an issue for seal swell and lubricity though), and higher cetane.

You can save a whole bunch of $$ by using 2-stroke outboard motor oil instead of the Lucas (half the amount of Lucas on my N-14), same amount of oz. on my MBZ, and it's only missing the injector cleaner, which is covered by the diesel kleen. 2-stroke motor oil IS an upper cylinder lubricant, as 2-stroke engines don't have oil pumps, so, the lubrication is provided in the fuel. Lucas fuel treatment is an upper cylinder lubricant, with injector cleaner thrown in. On my big truck, I found I only needed a quart per 150 gal tank (I have 2 of them), whereas with the LUcas, I had to throw in the entire gallon to get the same effect. And I've even used the 2-stroke stuff on a long trip in my Honda CRV. On the way I used the Lucas gas additive, on the way back, I used the 2-stroke motor oil. I got the same results of an additional 2 mpg. Not sure how much mpg extra I get on the MBZ, but thinks it's around 3-4 mpg more . . . not bad. I just picked up 16 oz. of the Walmart brand for $2.34 for 16 oz, put 4 in the car . . . sounds quieter already!!!! I'll do the gray bottle next week after I do my oil change.
