Blower motor Brush Source - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

Does anybody have a current source for blower motor brushes? I pulled the dead fan from my '82 300D and the brushes are worn to nubs. I found a few sources from a search, but the only current source I could find was ************** and I would rather not order from them.

Also I noticed that the ************** kit claims that their brushes will work for some W116s and all W123s, but my motor seems to be different from some of the others I have seen posted such as JimmyL's in this thread: W123 Blower Brushes

Mine is labeled BOSCH and looks like this:

I had good luck a few years ago with George Murphy. I think he manufactures the brushes himself. Here are his contact details:

ACE hardware carries generic brushes that I have filed down
to size for other applications.
Dont' know if they have ones that will fit the blower motor.

I threw in the towel and bought a new motor. The old one was coated (inside and out) with "brush dust". I'm good for
another 25 years.

Your blower motor looks just like mine. Probably just differences in production years. Before you go to all the trouble of fitting new brushes, clean everything really well with some electronics cleaner. Then check the armature, where the brushes contact, for grooves and thickness. If it has major wear, it is not worth your trouble and you would be better off with Bob's (Techguy) suggestion. (After 2 motors and a second set of brushes on each in 2 years, I can tell you been there done that.)

The communicator on mine is quite worn and groovy, so I suspect I should get a new motor, but $15 brushes are easier to swallow than a $100 motor. That's 1/4 the price I paid for the car.

I may give the Ace Brushes a shot to see if I can get a few more months out of it, and I will keep an eye out for a good deal on a motor.

Thanks for the ACE brush tip RichC, I got a set, used a bench grinder to get them to fit just right and soldered them in. It works like new now. $8! I'm working on a DIY article for the procedure.

We don't have an ACE here in BC, and the Lordco guy I spoke to said they don't carry stuff like that (when I showed him the nub of my brush).

Does NAPA have this kind of stuff (we do have NAPA in BC)? I took my blower apart because it was whining...

Try a vacuum cleaner shop. I think that is what the brushes I used were intended for.

You must have some hardware stores up there with the aisles of sliding doors of odd nuts, bolts, and odd parts.

Vacuum cleaner shop! Never thought of that! Benzlover suggested alternator and starter shop too. I sure hope I can find something before winter hits again

Radio Shack used to carry a few brushes, but I think you have to
have them ordered in now.

I don't like the quality of many of their products anymore either.

The webmaster has my how-to. I'll post a link here when it is posted. It is a bit light on pictures because I did not think it would work so well, so the DIY was sort of an afterthought.
