How much Fuel per hour? water filter/separator

I want to install a Racor water filter/separator, but unsure of which size to buy . . . 15 gal per hr, 20 gal per hr . . .?

At 30+ mpg that is 2 gals per hr at 60 mpg roughly . . .I know that the "extra" fuel is sent back to the tank, is 15 gals enough?

I used a Racor model 110 (15gph) on my 240D. I found it to be inadequate. I stepped up to the 45gph model 445R2. That one is perfect for this application.

Where did you mount it?

I'm thinking of making a bracket for the inner fender, so it will mount up straight . . . is that 9.3" about max? can you see the water, or do you just have to reach under & drain . . . even if there is no water?

What is that "button" on top of it for?

My 240D is a Euro. There is plenty of room for mounting it on the passenger side inner fender, although it takes about 13 feet of 5/16 hose to get there and back. I made a homemade bracket, mounted to existing holes. It is easy to reach around the filter to access the drain. I could not find 5/16 nipples that fit the filter. Had to use 3/8 nipples and force the hoses on.

The button is a primer pump. I believe there is a cheaper version available without the primer.

I use the Racor 200FG on my Datsun PU. it is a 60 hp 2.2 liter engine. close to the 240D engine. says the flow rate is 0.25 gpm. at 60mph I use 2 gal pre hour, or less. never had a fuel starvation issue with it.

so at 0.25 gpm, that is 15gph.

I have a spare one I pulled off a 300SD. so it should work on a 240D.

the Racor 200FG has a plastic bowl with a drain in the bottom. remove the lid, and the filter pushes on a little tube. there are 3 sizes of filtration, 2, 10 and __ micron. I get them at west marine, or at NAPA.

nice thing is if it plugs up out on the road, I remove the filter, throw in the bushes, prime the bowl and keep on trucking. also have a spin on filter.

there are lots of choices out there, this has worked well for me.

been thinking of putting one on the 85, but haven`t figured out where yet.

It is also a larger unit with more gph flow rate, 60 gph. I measured the 200fg, it is 5" X 8". If I read the chart correctly, the 500Fg is 12" X 6".

To take advantage of Racors cyclonic action you need a Ford,Dodge,or Duracrap Diesel. The best for our diesels is Stanadyne FM 100 seperator filter.

Not enough fuel flow passes thru our small MB diesels.

This is exactly I am thinking. We should not need high flow rate unit. The car at most uses 5 gph doing 125 mph ( push it to the limit ) at 25 mpg. Why we need high flow rate? Mine is a small unit, at most 10gph, and is doing fine on my 300SDL and 300D.

Flow rate and consumption rate are very different concepts. Flow exceeds consumption by a substantial margin.

The main reason why I consider the 15 gph model inadequate is the small bowl size. When the 240D had a heavy dose of krap in the tank, I found myself draining it every 100 miles or so. (Tools required). With the 45 gph model, it was plenty comfortable at 1000 miles between drain intervals. (No tools required).
