Road test- 1990 Lexus LS400, Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7-Series, Jaguar XJ6

This may have been posted here before... if not, some may find it interesting, but it focuses more on the Lexus, since it was the new kid on the block in 1990. Someone on the Lexus site posted this. As an owner of a 1991 LS400 and a 1988 S-Class, I thought it was interesting, but imo the Mercedes is just as fine of a car as the Lexus. In fact, my S-Class MB is less nagging, as its much easier to service.

(you have to let it play through the 15 second commerical, then about 1 minute into the program before the road test begins)

The most interesting thing to me was the different trim levels on offer in England. Can anyone in the US seriously contemplate buying and S-Class with no A/C, Cruise Control, or Radio?

No, I couldnt. Its almost unimaginable here. lol. I remember one of my friends had an imported 1983 Mercedes 280SEL (Euro) that was a manual shift car and had NO power windows. I didnt even know they were that plain over there, but apparently so. Looked strange seeing a long S-Class Mercedes with manual windows and manual shift tranny.

Did you also notice that the BMW 7-Series in the test did NOT have an airbag? Here in the USA the BMW 7-Series had them as early as 1988.

My S-class has no A/C or cruise control. Of course it did, but now it does not...

I would be interested to know what percentage of each of those 1990 models is still on the road.

The road test comparison to me is ridiculous because they call what is OBVIOUSLY a long wheelbase 420SEL, a 420SE.

Over and over.

I noticed that as well. They also forgot to mention that the Lexus has the look of the Mercedes, the dials of the BMW and the seats of the Jaguar....

Throw a 560SEL or the W140 into that mix and then we'll see whats what

Not surprised the Lexus would be smoother and quieter than the MB, the W126 was a design from the late 70's.

Well, I have a 1991 LS400 and a 1988 S-Class (and its a 6-cylinder) and I would not say that the LS400
is a quieter car. IMO, its as quiet as my LS400, but the engine is more noticable, but I do have an exhaust leak on the Benz.

I never found our old 300SDL to be quiet at all, nor a very comfortable ride. It did however handle and brake pretty damn well for such a big car. I think Lexuses tend to be far more quiet and isolating, but at the cost of driver involvement. To most people, this is great. To people who like a bit more road feel, not so much.

It isnt all that hard to make a car quieter. Sound proofing is very cheap and easy to install.

As a sidenote, holy crap did that Jag have an ugly interior. Reminds me of a domestic from that era *shudder*
