Diesel purge- second container for return?

Hello,

Ive been considering doing a diesel purge on my 83 240d. The only aspect that confuses me is that both the supply and return go to the same bottle.

Wouldn't it be better to send the return line, with its soot and other crud, to a separate bottle? Using one bottle-after a few minutes wouldn't you be sending some crud back up the supply line? Is there a reason to use one container?

Im sorry if Im just confused about how this works. Ive never seen this question come up and I cant help wondering. Any thoughts?

Thanks for any info about this!

Putting the supply and return into a bottle is really no different than the stock setup. The only difference is there is a coarse screen in the tank to catch the big gunk. When you put both lines in a bottle of diesel purge your supply side it still getting filtered through the pre and secondary filters, that is if your remove the lines from the steel lines that go to the tank. If you only stick the supply into the bottle all your return fuel will go into the tank, and you'll run through the diesel purge in no time. The injection pump actually supplies the injectors with way more fuel then they need, so if the supply and return aren't in the same bottle you'll empty the bottle in a hurry, and not get the full affect of the diesel purge that goes into the tank.

Nope, because the engine will only take what it needs and send the rest back through. The fuel filters will take out anything harmful. Just do it at prescribed! Good luck, post back with results :-)

99% of the fuel pumped through the injection system gets returned to the tank.
Your first bottle would run dry in about 5 seconds.
