Does your 92 400E have a Check Engine Light??
Just curious.
My 92 400E does NOT have a check engine light or the handy dandy LED code decipher'er. Does yours?? |

Mine has neither. They made 2 versions: the California models, which did have "check engine" lights, and the "49 states" version for everywhere else. I don't think any 400E came with a built-in LED (though you can make your own LED tester for under $10).

Check our JimF's web site for a schematic:
http://pages.prodigy.net/jforgione/MB_X11.html He has a real wealth of info there and has clearly put a lot of time and effort into this!

400E Engine check light?
My 92 400E has a check engine light. How do I get the code read out?

No MIL lamp on my '93 300E either (49 state version). I kinda like it - my wife never comes home and tells me the check engine light is on. How great is that?
Never gone looking to see if it has an LED flashy thingy. - JimY |

Al, it appears that the 92 year models came in two flavors - California and 49 State. My 92 500E does not have the CE light. It is a North America car, but does not have the CE light. This appears true for the 400Es, that is, the 92 model year cars.

Mine has it - it's a CA car
And always has been. Out here we're always blessed (cursed) with extra emissions crap.
Sometimes there will be cars like the guy in WA that has one - if the car was sold new in WA, it was probably either a dealer trade (but that would still be an 800-mile minimum trade distance, so unlikely) or was originally built for the CA market and then diverted at the port or somewhere earlier in the production sequence. If sold used, the cars obviously go all over either through private hands or a dealer auction. It works the other way too, of course, but only with used cars. A dealer can't sell a 49state car here as new. And in the case of diesels, no individual can register a new diesel in CA currently. New ones are not sold and If you want to buy one out of state, it needs to have at least 7500 miles on it before it can be brought in and registered in your name. Jim 92 400E |

A VMI from your dealer will tell you if it's a CA car. |

I'd litereally searched for 3 hours on the formus that night looking for answers. This is my third W124 and I was able to get the codes from that connector on the other cars. This one, according to M.B.DOC in another thread, has a problem with that connector. I might try the big multi-connector though with a home-made code tool (good links on this site for sure). I'm not even getting the ack code (single blink) from mine. Just on while holding the button then off. Also cannot clear the code. Maybe the multiconnector is the way to figure out what is going on with the car.

But in any case the 38 pin connector should work, on which you have a private message. |
