sixto - there is a 260SE???

Merv - ok. Why not you start a headcount, and I'd put my hands up in the column ... with an introduction ..

I'm not familiar with a W126 with a larger engine than that in a 560SEL. I read that an Arabian localization of the 500SEL inlcuded 1000SEL badging.

YMSin, That auto dimming rear view mirror mounts on the windshield like the mirrors of many American cars (that I have had to repair). This requires removing the original mirror, or setting the new mirror lower on the windshield. Please let me know how you install yours.

Thanks,
Sixto

Sixto,

Do you know any more about 1000SEL's? I had asked about one some time ago, as I saw one near where I live. The badging looked real, not pieced together. The car looked like a mildly stretched 126, with maybe an extra foot of cabin.

I still see this car a couple times a week, but have not had the opportunity to see him someplace where we could talk.

The 260SE was not available in the US. I wonder if it was more motivated than the W140/S280 LWB.

I don't know anything more about the 1000SEL than that they exist. I thought there were a regular 500SEL with a different badge. I expect many of the appointments we hear about (refrigerators, wet bars, etc.) are dealer or after market items.

Mike - have a look at the 1000SEL's exhaust. It should be a little bigger, and twin on both sides. If its the regular exhaust, it must have been a made-over (i.e. fake).

This is the first time I'm hearing of a 1000SEL and a 260SEl. I can imagime the 1000 to be full of Arab owners, and the 260SEL a little grumpy on the acceleration.

sixto - I have not installed the rear view mirror though MBenz did make a successful installation. There is another product I saw, Japanese - clip-ons. The price about USD20, and works just the same to vut out the glare. No wirings.

1000SEL?

Wow,
Never heard of one. So it's just a re-badged 500? What else is different? Any pics around?

Curious

Cheers,

1000 SEL? Bah!

Let's see, using Mercedes typical method of nomenclature, a 1000 SEL would have a 10-liter (620 cubic inch) engine. That's only 3.1 liters more than the 450 SEL 6.9 engine and 1.8 liters larger than the largest American engine installed in a mass-produced car in the last 50 years (500 c.i. Cadillac from 1970-1976). I can't even begin to imagine the exterior dimensions of something like this, but it would probably look right at home in a Duesenberg or Bugatti Royale.

I think someone went to a fabricating shop and ordered a practical joke. Or perhaps spliced two 500 SEL's together.

W126 1000SE

Bullocks.

Did a skimp check and discovered the largest engine cc for the W126 was 560 = 560SEL/SEC.

Paul may be right. Its spliced and spiced.

From what I've heard and read, the 1000SEL is a rebadged 500SEL. It appears to be of the early W126 vintage too as I haven't heard of a rebadged 560SEL. They're not spliced, stretched or mechanically modified. Just 500SELs with a couple more options and badged to suit the market.

For that matter, I don't know if MB markets the 1000SEL or if a local Saudi Arabian reseller does the badging. It all seems as silly to me as chrome wheels and gold badging on US MBs. Neither was a factory option on any W126. But to each his/her own.
