Linksys G router with Speed Booster
This isn't specific to the forum, neccessarily, but I was wondering if you have any thoughts on the advantage of using the Linksys G router with Speed Booster on a cable modem. The manufacturer claims a 30% speed advantage over their G router. Anyone know whether this is true or not?

Are you transferring large files or streaming music across your wireless network? If not, you'll notice nothing under normal web browsing conditions (where bandwidth to/from the ISP is the limiting factor). If so, I'd consider going a step beyond SpeedBooster to one of the newer SRX or draft-N type routers and a compatible wireless card.

Srx
So, this newer product would improve transmission on my current connection, a cable modem (Cox Cable)? I know that DSL essentially gets around the limitation of the old Bell System copper wire by compressing and de-compressing at either end. Is that what SRX does? I've never heard of that before.

No, that was under the 'if so' section of my response. NOTHING will improve your web browsing speed short of working with your ISP to pay for a faster connection (or looking at a different ISP using another technology). The only reason to look at faster wireless speeds is if you're transferring lots of data inside your own network, i.e. streaming audio internally, etc...

So, the speed gain is only between the computers I have working off my router? The little I have read was on the boxes in the store. It is stated in such a way that the casual reader (like me) believes this is going to eliminate some sort of bottle neck coming into my house.
This wouldn't really do me any good. As long as we're on this subject, how does the connection guys have compare to cable? Cable is, as I understand it, superior to DSL, at least in some of its permutations. How about wireless high speed internet like EVDO?

Speed survey
I read a survey of ISP speeds in various areas of the country recently, but can't remember where it was now. Ironically, ther areas with the highest speed connections werre also the areas with highest dissatisfaction.
It seems we're never happy with what we've got. Well, SOME of us, anyhow. When I get aggravated with the slowness of my connection,, I just think back to the first time I ever tried down-loading a photograph on my 2400 baud modem.

Dee8go,
yes i remember the days of the dial-up modem. I cannot imagine waiting that long for a webpage to load, I would end up beating the computer. I've had RoadRunner for about 4 years or so...quite satisified..only went down maybe 4-6 times in the 4 years.....

Cox
I have Cox Cable for my ISP. I've had it for 4-5 years and have to say it's been very good. What do you have?

I have the Fios I mentioned earlier. Had Cox for a couple of years and it was fine. You get more speed with Fios at a comparable rate.

You did mention that before. What is it? Is that the name of the company. I've never heard it mentioned anywhere else.

It's a new service offered by Verizon. Just google verizon fios. It's pure fiber optic to your house. Most of Fairfax is covered. They also offer digital TV for $39.95 per month which is about half of the cost of cable.
