At the risk of sounding like a Grammar Nazi, the contraction "it's" means nothing more than "it is." I see that misused here constantly...aaaaarrrrggghhhh!!!!!
Incorrect: "My 300D had it's ALDA adjusted." Correct: "My 300D had its ALDA adjusted."

OK, I stumbled on to this thread for the anal: My 2 pet peeves are YOUR and YOU'RE along with LOSE and LOOSE! (oh, and a long ago one from my days in the steel industry: GUAGE instead of GAUGE).
Anally yours,

You mean "Let's" ...right?
Those pesky contractions, they're tough!

Actually...
"it's" is correct in both cases. In the case of "My 300D had it's ALDA adjusted", the apostrophe indicates a possessive (the 300D's ALDA...)

JustinMorrison,
I'm with you here. I was wondering myself about that "its" argument.

Justin and Turbo,
I'm afraid you're both wrong. That's exactly the misconception I'm talking about. Let me reiterate: "it's" ONLY means "it is" or "it has." NO EXCEPTIONS, I PROMISE YOU. That's no doubt one of the most misunderstood grammatical blunders in the English language. No matter how much you feel that "it's" indicates a possessive, you're just plain wrong... If you have doubts, there are many websites devoted to this very issue. Here is just one: http://www.fred.net/kathy/its.html [Edited by Zoonhollis on 07-05-2001 at 10:47 AM]

. . . .need more of this!
Zoon, great stuff!
I've only one thing to add. Please, please use the button marked "SPELL CHECK" before sending. It is a useful tool that in some cases, would be the difference in understanding what the msg says and gibberish! The spelling/composition of many msg posted here is so bad, that I do not respond because can't figure out what the msg says! One other request; separate 'thoughts' with new paragraphs. It makes the msg much easier to read. |

Please tell me this is all in jest!
It's (I'm sorry) It is ( sorry again, I ment "I am sorry")not easy to type a message down especially if you're (you are) in your office or just doing a hundred other things. I think clarity is the key and I AM quite willing to forgive any grammatical misgivings just as long as I can understand what the hell someone is trying to say. Now if this was an exam paper or a company document well then I'D be peeved. Oh and Spell Checker does not pick up grammatical errors such as the dropping of an "I" or some preposition. I really like to try and help people in the forum so if I don't understand what their saying I ask them a specific question going by what I can decipher from their original post. Maybe I'M crazy but I think this is the purpose of the site to help. If you don't have patience for that then, well, that's your perogative. Bringing this up goes way beyond anal. You want to know how irate this topic can get go here... http://www.netnexus.com/forums/nations/msgs/message_14552.php |

Yal,
I did not mean to stir up so much commotion with this thread. I submitted it with the best of intentions, and meant for it to be taken lightly, though somewhat seriously. By the by, you had a couple of errors in your message: "Oh and Spell Checker does not pick up grammatical errors such as the dropping of an 'I' or some preposition. I really like to try and help people in the forum so if I don't understand what their [sic] saying I ask them a specific question going by what I can decipher from their original post. Maybe I'M crazy but I think this is the purpose of the site to help. If you don't have patience for that then, well, that's your perogative [sic]. Bringing this up goes way beyond anal." It's "they're" and "prerogative." ...all in good fun. -mww
