Diesel Section Suggestion

Hi,
I've been reading up on the diesels and have a suggestion. I think it would be easier for folks to find relevant information if the section was sub divided by motor or years with also a general and performance section.

Thank you,
Jeff

Already a "Diesel Performance" section

1.The Diesel engines do not discriminate, nor should we.
2.Why would you not want to become more cognizant of all aspects Diesel?
3.Mercedes has (Craftily) provided us since 1892 with Diesel Engine Identifiers
I.E. OM 602.962 (in my case). You could, if you so wish,Ignore any engine
number information not pertaining to your particular Automobile.

Are you Skilled in the Bureaucratic Arts?

There already is a diesel performance section at the top of the diesel forum page.

That is correct. Would that all of us be better at remembering to put that information in the title to posts that we generate!

In any case, there is enough crossover information between the different engines and chassis models that it's good to read about more than just what you have. For example, some of the "features" of the OM603 engine in the W124 chassis debuted on the OM617 engine in the 1985 W123 cars as well as the OM601 (602?) engine in the W210 cars.

When you read the "Introduction into service" manuals that Mercedes published year by year, they are always referring to past years and models when talking about the new cars. Since Mercedes assumes that everyone has a complete set of all previous manuals, they don't repeat much.

I think you have a good idea for beginners to find helpful info on the particular car that each owner has. However, MB dieseler tend to be a bit different that other car owners in the attitude about the car(s) they have. Most MB diesel owners would easily buy another different MB diesel before they would buy some other car. They tend to want to learn about other MB diesels. As time goes on you and other beginners tend to learn alot about ALL MB diesels, and by including all MB diesels in one section they and you will learn more. Sorry if you are not a new MB dieseler, my view may sound insulting; but I think the majority of folks here agree that it is the best system.
Just my view.

We could subdivide it into 20 different forums with a forum for each chassis and each engine type. After the subdivision, each forum would still have hundreds of posts.........thereby requiring a search via keyword, anyway.

So, all that we would have accomplished is a complete destruction of the sense of community that is the principal benefit of diesel discussion.

Once you have 20 different forums, nobody is going to any of them unless they need specific info. The forum is greater than this.

This wouldn't be an issue if everyone put the appropriate chassis and engine numberings in the title / text of their posts

Signatures don't do it, and change over time (if you have to look back a couple years, you have no idea what somebody was driving at that point). Even worse is referring to another one of your threads without a direct link ("as you guys know from my other thread"). The reference will get lost quite easily...

So, please make it easy for people to search!

PS. Perhaps a pulldown menu with engine and chassis numberings might encourage people to place these in threads when posting?

I dont know if placing full info like VIN/engine/chassis numbers is a good idea. It is too much info, possibly could let some one disreputable use a combination to rebirth a stolen car.

I would like to see a sticky on starting a diesel that wont start. This is such a common problem that it could have a list of things to try first.

My second suggestion is to have a fuel watch sticky that people can post diesel prices on (with a date). We have that sort of thing here in Australia, it often causes fuel prices to drop. At times there is a 30c / US gal difference between towns that are only 40 miles apart. Once it is posted for all to see it is corrected quick.

Third suggestion, it would be good for those of us from outside the USA if the sites parts sales were available to us.
