TAX?WTF?Phil please explain

Just got finished working out an order on Fastlane for 300 bucks. went through all the damn steps....THEN they try to ding me for friggin'TAX.What's that all about? I'm in Cali. Fastlane have a retail outlet in Cali or something? Damn, I'm a bit P*ssed. No way to save my cart either. There is no way in hell I'm paying sales tax on an online purchase.

Agree.

Travis_k 09-21-2011 07:07 PM

Its not just this website, its a new california law. I agree this parts business isnt competitive with the one in arizona, but I think that unless you have an out of state address you are stuck with paying sales tax

So Fastlane has a retail outlet in Cali?

What law are you speaking of please? Does it apply to ANY state you orderfrom?

NoSparkNeeded 09-21-2011 07:14 PM

Travis

Unless I'm missing something that is a "proposed" law in your link.

Aquaticedge 09-21-2011 07:20 PM

a few months back there was a tax law that was signed in as law in Cali that has to do with tax, especially on online orders, a way for Cali to try and make up their huge budget Deficit...

Yep.

And I dont think its just proposed anymore.

That violates all kinds of interstate commerce laws unless the ware house is in Cali. Fastlane is a Worldpac reseller I believe and surely they have a cali location.

FYI

The PelicanParts warehouse is in California.

Welp

I guess, despite the fact that I LOVE this forum, and all the people in it, I will have to buy parts elsewhere. I did always love the instant gratification of plopping down cash and getting something to carry off, I guess I'm back to that now. I saved a bit of money online, and had the convenience of getting it all at one time from the same place, however I will not pay sales tax until there is no option. Now I'm off to find a brave shop that just says NO. I'm sure there will be some for a good long time. I guess everything good you find takes a bit of hassle and effort. The reality is, that buying parts here resulted in several botched orders for me. Yes they were always honorably corrected as fast as possible, but had I depended on the results in time, it would not have been good. Oh well, I'm sure someone would like my money. If treated well, I stay with vendors in my work and personal life, even if I have to pay a little more, but to the vendor, NOT to tax. Want to eat the tax to keep my business? Fine, just give me 10% off the median price I can find. No shipping,No tax.

arcticathlon 09-21-2011 09:15 PM

what happens if you order parts from ************** ? i used to get my parts from them, and was not charged tax. now i use fastlane for my parts, because i want to support the forum. if auto haus charges you tax then you must buy it locally, based on the options you have left open to yourself.

POSTING COMPETING PARTS SITES ON THIS WEBSITE IS AGAINST THE RULES

In case you haven't seen it, Pelican Parts has acquired PeachParts (also known as FastLane) recently. See this post here: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/tech-help/305286-important-news-regarding-peachparts.html#post2792329

Unfortunately, since we are a company located in California, Peach Parts is now a company located in California and is required by the law to collect California sales tax. Unfortunately, that is the law, and we are required to abide by California state laws. If you give Phil a call on the toll-free number, I can authorize him to give you a discount on the parts equal to an approximate amount of the tax (still have to technically pay it to Sacramento though).

We have a new catalog coming soon that will offer significant discounts on the parts here (FastLane will be replaced by a new Pelican Parts Mercedes catalog). We've been in this business for about 13 years now and have built a very loyal following in the Porsche & BMW arena. We will be working hard to earn your trust, respect and business in the future.

Thanks for your continued patience and support,

Wayne

OK Wayne

I'll give it a shot.See if it works OK for me. Even so I just despise the thought of paying another tax to the state. It's just more money they can use against you, heh. As to arcticathlon 's suggestion, I looked at the site. Not set up for easy online orders. Ya gotta call. Really sloppy unintuitive site. If calling or paying tax were the only options, I guess I'd call. I have loyalty to Peach so I have to give it first chance. If a worthy vendor wants to give me a good deal to give the government money, I don't like it but I'll take the deal, but now I'll have togo to other parts sites periodically, to see if I'm ahead of the curve. Taxeshurt every online marketer. If I have to pay tax, I wil always default to local"brick and mortar"

Just for clarification, you collect California sales tax on the sales delivered to California customers only, is that correct?
