Slooooooooooow

Last day or 2 the site has been extremely slow with long page loads and/or this error if it doesn't load. All other websites on my connection are fine, and I've experienced it through both our FiOS and business high speed connections. Just an FYI

FastCGI Error

The FastCGI Handler was unable to process the request. Error Details:
  • The FastCGI pool queue is full
  • Error Number: 4 (0x80070004).
  • Error Description: The system cannot open the file.
HTTP Error 500 - Server Error.

I'm working on it. It's difficult to track this down.

I took a close look at the log files today, and found something odd. There were a lot of bad requests for something related to "Doubleclick" which is the ad serving software used by Google on this forum. When I moved the forums over to the new server, I set it up so that any bad requests would default to the home page. Well, when the DoubleClick requests came back invalid, the server was serving up the home page. That (I believe), may have meant that the home page was being loaded 12-14 times in a row. Loading the homepage is not too server intensive, but it does generate database queries and use CPU time. If everyone is doing the equivalent of loading the home page 10 times, then that means that the server load has increased 10X at that moment. I think it's random when this occurs. I've fixed the problem so that the Doubleclick calls don't load up the home page. I'll keep watching the server to see if there are any additional issues. In the meantime, post here if you see more problems.

thx,

Wayne

Excellent.

It's been fine for the last few days.............but, the problem was definitely random.........and fleeting.

I installed a new monitoring system on the forums that will load the home page every 1 minute, log the results, and then send me an alert email if it takes more than 3 seconds to load. This should allow me to track the slowness a bit better.

Thanks for everyone's patience and continued support,

Wayne

I'm watching it very carefully. It just went slow for a short period a few minutes ago.

FYI the current slow issue

Level3 ( a large backbone provider) has a major core router in Los Angeles that has serious issues.
They have scheduled a maintenance window for Tuesday AM (12:01-6:00AM Pacific) where they will be replacing the chassis.
Two of our four upstreams have core connectivity with Level3 as well as others.
We have routed around them for routes with Level3 in their path.
However, I can fix the outbound, but don’t have control of the return path.
Time Warner, cox and Charter are all on the same router and are pushing lots of traffic.
Everyone is routing around this, but they are pushing the congestion to other paths.
