View New Messages

I have been seeing a posting on the site the last few days. It is a rectangle blue background inside white letters view new messages! I have clicked on it, and it points towards downloading some software. Does anyone know or have a clue whether it is something derived for the forum site mail or some kind of adware?? I was reluctant to install it.

Have you been logging in?

It is my understanding that there are ads (likely Google) that appear between posts if you don't log in. Maybe that is what you are seeing?

Sometimes adware does appear here.....
so I would not click on it...
just go check your messages directly.... PM's...
click on user cp....
then unread messages...
under ' your notifications'...

There is no such message or option on this forum... Odds are high your computer has spyware on it
I recommend this procedure to deal with it.

1. Restart the computer.
2. Launch a browser window, and go to google.com
3. Search for : rkill, and the list should show several hits, one of which will be the link: "downloading rkill" click on it AND WAIT! DO NOT CLICK ON ANYTHING ELSE ON THE PAGE
4. After the file downloads, at the bottom of the page is a set of recommended downloads. Get adwcleaner and junkremover
5. Close the browser.
6. Run and allow rkill to function. When it's done, close the note that pops up.
7. Run adwcleaner, agree to the install, scan then clean and let it reboot. Close the note it pops up after reboot.
8. Run junkremover

Funny mine says "Private Messages"...

At the top of each thread (so not in the list of thread views but say for example in this thread) there is a bit of text "View New Messages" on the left hand side right at the top of the thread. This is above "User cp". Click on the little icon on the left and the page for the thread gets refreshed. This does exactly the same as pressing F5 (web page refresh) in my browser.

In fact if you go to "New Posts" the text above "User CP" gets called "Search results" Hover over the open folder icon and it says "Reload page"

If any link on this site asks you to download software, it is malware. Ads often contain links to malware even if it is not known to site admins. Ad vendors can change ads and their customers can change where the ads point to. Be diligent and remember that this site should not be asking for any software installation. The same goes for most other sites out there.

That is because you are special...
mine says ' welcome leathermang, you last visited ... , your notifications .. then a number'....

You realize that what browser you use makes a difference in what pages look like ?

I think all it was advertisement. I see different script floating about & below the web page from time to time. I was told it helps pay and support the different sites! There is so much hacking going on anymore just one unintelligent click can freeze you dead in your tracks!

I did an operating system change & I some how got infected on replacing some files. I happened to mistake getting a Microsoft application from the wrong site. Anyway, I couldn't get free of the lockup for very long. It would keep returning. It was too deep on the machine. I ended up doing a complete disk wipe and reinstalling the system completely. I will get a complete back-up of the system now, so it is not so intense of a job to revive all the data. I wanted to move away from Windows Vista to Windows 7. I am liking it much better, but I don't qualify for the free Windows 10 upgrade I found out. Window 7 is supposed to have the safety feature on the zip drives.

How did you find Win7 to put on it ?
I had to settle for win8 on this new laptop....and along with a lot of other people hate it....
