Slow oil pressure rise in SL320
I had my car for a couple of months now, and did my first oil change.........1997 SL320, with 40K miles.
Prior to changing the oil, it would take less than one second for the oil pressure gauge to read 3+, when starting the car cold. Now it takes about 2-3 seconds. I used 10W-30 Castrol oil (non-snthetic), and a generic oil filter, from a local parts place. The owner's manual is totally useless, and I didn't recieve the maintanence manual, when I bought the car. I figure the problem may be: 1) Oil too thick............possibly should have used 5W-30 2) The generic oil filter is too constrictive..........it fit, but seemed to have a different surface patern than the original. Any comments? What is the mileage interval for oil changes? Thanks.

you should have used synthetic oil. I'm not sure if that'll fix your problem but definately help the engine to last longer. Especially if you change the oil according to the mfg. I think it's around every 7.5K miles.

Thanks Larry,
What synthetic, and weight do you recommend? I live in the Midwest, and store the car during the Winter months.

I found the problem!!!!
While the generic oil filter was the same size and fit, as the MB, it didn't have the same outside pattern.........seemed more restrictive. I then replaced the old oil filter, and the pressure rose in about 1 sec. I will now order only MB oil filters!!!!!!!!!!
