Question 1997 SL500 Console won't open

I was hoping I could figure it out how to open my console box myself but no luck. I know it is supposed to flip open sideways and I have tried everything I know to get the console / armrest door open. Pushing the button does nothing. I have tried with the key (next to the phone compartment) in every position. I've tried with the car on and the doors unlocked, off with the doors unlocked. I even ran a small screwdriver around the lip. Any suggestions?? I know it is vacuum controled but ...help???? Any advice is appreciated....

Thanks,
Mike

There are two buttons on the console, one in the front that moves the armrest forward and one on the drivers side that opens the console, it opens towards the passenger side. If the button is not operating then it is still locked, in that case you have a malfunction in your lock, line, or vacuum pump. You can remove the wood trim on your console, after removing the AC, radio, and etc, there are two screws under the ashtray area, then the console trim pops off, underneath there are two vacuum lines, one for the cup holder slider/storage area, and one for the console. You can cut and patch if needed, the line that is bad. You can also access the line from the rear of the car, above the battery is the vacuum pump where all the acessories plug in. They pull to lock, and push to unlock. (air that is) The central locking system is awesome when working right, but when you have a problem it can be a real bother! Good luck!
Regards,
Brian
