Transmission/differential 1999 SL500

I am worried about the transmission/differential on my 1999 R129 SL500.

The transmission changes gear less smoothly than previously, especially under a hard throttle. It still engages drive or reverse promptly, however.

More significantly, there is a strange ticking noise from the rear of the car when cornering. When turning to the right, the ticking noise comes from the left. When turning to the left, the ticking noise comes from the right. There is no noise when going straight. The noise seems to come from the rear. If I drive faster, the ticking is faster, too. Any ideas? I am worried about my diff.

The car has 81,000 miles on the clock. Any help would be much appreciated.

This is a long shot, but when I did u-tuns quickly (left) my car would BUzz at me. I later found out it was my motor mounts and transmission mount. The Dealer replaced them under regular maintenance, but I noticed that when they did it stopped the noise. You also might want to check those flex discs. Good luck!

Flex discs are the big rubber spacers between the driveshaft and the transmission, and between the differential and the driveshaft. There are two of them, just crawl under the car with a flash light and look along the driveline, you will see them in there. They absorb vibration while allowing flexibility in the driveline. Inspect for cracks and if you see any nylon coming through you are due for new ones. If the mounts or flex disks check out to be ok, the next thing I would check are the rear half shafts. That new of a car though I would think those are ok. Good luck!

As I recall there was a Mercedes TSB about the ticking sound from the rear end when cornering, but sorry I can't seem to locate it right now
