rain leak by rear view mirror

When it rains, water seems to be dripping from the space above the rear view mirror where the roof seems to join. Coincidentally, when it rains, both the hard top and soft top leak in the same place, so Im inclined to believe it may not be the seal.
Someone pointed out the aluminum where the tops rest on. Could it be leaking
from the small crack like space there? Would I be doing any harm by putting some silicone there? thanks.I like to be equipped with as much as I can before I have to take it in for the repair. thanks.
