Tie Rod
My 1993 500SL failed Pa. inspection. Goodyear dealer says it needs a left inner tie rod assembly R&P. I don't know what the R & P part is. Am I looking at a big deal here? Expensive? Should I trust a Goodyear chain to do it? Will I need a front end alignment after the tie rod is replaced? Should I let Goodyear do that? In Pa. one's car can't pass inspection if there's any play in the front wheels. Car seems to drive fine but must pass inspection to be driven. Please help soon! Must have car inspected by 8/31 or it can't be driven!

I'm not familiar with the suspension on the '93, but typically replacing a tie rod is fairly simple. I've done it on both my SL and my SEL. The only special tool I used is a pickle fork set that I picked up at Pep Boys for somewhere around $25. The socket size is either 17mm or 19mm.
Don't let Goodyear do it. It will need an alignment afterwards. If you aren't going to replace the tie rod yourself, let the alignment place do it. But find an alignment place that understands Mercedes. You'll have to ask around in your area.
