Question Ball stud procedure - 380SL

I am about to replace the ball studs and possibly rocker arms on one cylinder of my '82 380SL. I would appreciate some help with the procedure and the tools required. I have read posts referring to special tools used in the procedure and I am still a little confused about the installation. Also, I see a number of different size thrust washers (shims) available for purchase.

I am replacing the ball studs based on the noise coming from the area, hopefully indicating they are bad. How will I know if they are bad?

I intend to use a valve spring compressor to remove the rocker arm and then remove the ball stud for replacement. I will also use a dial indicator to read for cam wear on the lobe and do a visual inspection of the rocker arm.

What is the procedure for installation of the replacement parts and ensuring the proper adjustment and shim is used. I have seen info on a ball stud height checking tool, go-no-go, and others. Which tools do I need?

I sure would appreciate your help.

Thanks,

Larry K.

I sent you an email offering to send you the procedure off the CD.

But bottom line is you point the cam lobe up, remove the rocker, unscrew the ball stud with a 24mm deepwell, install the new one, and use the tool to adjust it with the appropriate thickness shim.

I recommend re-installing the original shim, and rocker, and then cranking the engine over 5-6 times. Let it sit overnight, then measure with the tool and change the shim if needed.

You can also follow Stevb's recommendation. Compress the ballstud in a vise before installing, and take the measurement right away.

Lots of posts on this.
