Hydraulic Res levels
Hello, first I'd like to thank the folks here for all the info I've gleaned over the past couple days. I'm working on a '92 300SL softop issue. I've disasembled
the top (front locks) and found the hydraulic pumps are leaking (and have been from the looks of things.) so i cleaned them, and will be ordering new ones. This car has had this problem when purchased several years ago, she's been 'manually' lowering top since then. I also now understand how to read the codes and create the tools to 'double check' how things are going or if there are other problems. the questions i have is that there had been substained leakage and I fear the fluid levels are low (when holding the softtop activator switch I could hear air leaking from the pump seals as well). I've spotted the unit in the rear above the battery, I haven't removed it or much yet till I understand it better. I would think there is a 'tank' that can be checked, and if so how? Also what type of fluid would I replace it with, would it require anything special. I'm very thankfull for the entries have answered many of my questions and concerns, and has educated me in much more detail than I'd hoped for. Now just a nudge and I think I can have things all working again soon. Thanks in Advance, Jack |

The tank sits in the spare tire well...that is where you fill up too.
I did this fix (front locks) about a month ago too. Use the MB fluid ONLY or you will be fixing other hydro-mechanical failures in short order!

Thanks for the update
Sounds great, it's late but I'll look first thing in the AM.
We're waiting for the locks to come anyway. Jack |
