SL500 oil change

I just got a 2000 SL500. A couple of questions regarding oil change. It looks like the cover to the oil filter has a torque wrench setting printed on it. Do I really need to use a torque wrench (and probably some sort of MB manufactured attachement) to remove and replace this thing or does a normal oil filter wrench work ? And, is the oil pan plug a normal bolt ? I read something someplace referring to one with an allen wrench-like bolt, but it wasn't clear what year or model was being discussed. Also, any oddities I should be aware of ?

I change the oil in my car without a torque wrench, just be sure to use the new seal that comes with your filter kit from MB, don't use an aftermarket filter, you will notice it comes with a brass ring too for the oil drain plug. I use my hands and just loosen it, it is kind of firm but works. The seal goes in the cap, the new one makes it a little harder to screw back on, but just keep going until the lip hits the metal edge and you will be fine. I didn't replace the seal once and it leaked. The bolt on the pan is a 14mm, I think, a standard socket will work. Congrats on your Car! you will find it is a wonderful machine that gives you lots in return for you taking care of it.

What kind of oil filters do you use? I have used Mann for the past couple oil changes but you got me wondering if there isn't something better.

The best filter is the one that Mercedes makes for it. I used a filter from pep-boys once, my oil pressure was ok, but not what it was before. I replaced it just out of fear of oil flow restriction. Also as most anything these days they are made overseas and you can't be too sure about the quality. Don't take a chance with that wonderful machine, always use the MB part, and you will be sure not to have any pre-mature failures.

I do my own oil changes as well and do not use a torque wrench. I have been using STP aftermarket oil filters and they come with the filter element as well as the o-ring for the filter housing cap and the copper gasket for the oil pan plug. At $9.99 the STP filter is a great deal that performs well. Of course, I am working on my SLK where everything goes together just a little bit easier than it does on the SL (**lol**)
