Tranny Problems

Hey folks.

Having some shifting problems and being a long weekend here i won't be able to get my '91 500 into the shop until Tuesday. Thought I'd solicit an opinion or two.

While driving today my beast didn't want to shift into drive but rather wanted to stay in third. At times, it wanted to stay in second unless I kicked down the accelerator hard or was driving softly.

Had similar problems a few weeks ago, found the fluid low and that seemed to fix the problem. Now it is back but the fluid appears fine.

Just curious if there are electrical issues involved in the shifting process. Certainly hoping to not have to rebuild a tranny.

Thanks in advance and remember....I just drive 'em, I don't know how they work.

First rule of thumb for transmissions is if you start having problems and you don't know how long it's been since a fluid and filter change, change the filter and fluid and see if that helps.

I don't know what the maintenance intervals are for the R129.

balky shifting

90+% of the time the cause for erratic shifting is trash in the valve body or governor (varies pressure with output shaft speed and triggers shifts) Erratic electrical connection to th edownshift solenoid will make things crazy too.

If it does not slip when shifting, chances are wearing things like clutches are OK and the problem can be cured with fluid& filter change and vigorous exercise through the gears a number of times to flush the trash out.
