VERY expensive 560SL seat frame
I needed a new seat frame for my SL. None of the aftermarket upholstery places had them. Called the local MBZ dealer and was just quoted One thousand, two hundred dollars ($1200.00) for just the "Cushion Frame". They told me that apparently MBZ ran out of the original production run and had to order a small number of new ones at an obviously higher price. I fortunately found an entire good seat at a local junk yard for $150. If you need a new seat frame, buy it now!

What went wrong with your old seat frame? Accident?

It just broke from old age and heavy use. Very common with this design. The springs are under constant stress and when any break occurs, the seat instantly becomes terribly uncomfortable. Never sit on the side edge of the seat as that imparts the worse stress.

The advice that I got was to find a used passenger seat and use the frame.

Exactly what I did. They usually get much less wear. Now I'm in the process of changing them out.

FWIW, I priced a seat frame through Phil here at FastLane and....I'm struggling to recall exactly....I believe the price was right around $700.00. Still not cheap, but far less that the MB dealer...which is the case with most parts Phil will sell you.
I highly recommend Phil!!!

My driver seet in 560sl is getting sort of squished. Lether is still OK to look at but hard like rock. Do you know what the repoare will cost me and what is the right way to go about it? Seems seat problems are common.

It was an absolutely miserable job to, by myself, remove (especially replace) and work on my seat most of yesterday. I'd take it to an experienced auto upholstery shop and let them repad it for you. Couldn't cost more than a couple of hundred $. Cheaper than a sore back. The 560 seat spring is far inferior to that in the 300 series cars so there is only so much you can do. Another way out is to buy a good set of sheepskins and add a layer of padding, where it is needed, between the seat and the skins.

Thanks Ron. I will stay away from do-it-yourself approach. I saw people on this form mention horsehair seat stuffing? What did you find inside your seat?

Horsehair is on the pad on top of the springs. The leather has felt and foam pads sewn into pockets on the bottom side.
