Unhappy Cam shaft help needed.....

Hi all.....Well, remember I asked about what the possible causes of my valve train tapping could be?

My buddy/wrench just called and said it appeared to be three lobes on the cam along with their followers (rocker arms?). Anyway he said I could look for the replacement parts to save some cash. So my questions are:

- Any reputable place to get a passenger side cam for an '85 380 SL?
- Is this part shared with other 380s / years?
- Would it be OK to go with a used one?
- Lastly, can the passenger side camshaft be pulled through the front or does the entire head have to come off?

Any advice is appreciated.

Note: He said that my fuel regulator COULD possibly be faulty and that excess fuel washed over these particular lobes. Therefore, negating the lubrication effect. Anyone ever hear of this phenomenon?

More likely, the holes in the oiler tube are blocked and the cam lobe - rocker did not get enough oil. So you need to get a new oiler kit - about $12 - and make sure the holes in the tube are clear.

You can go with a matched set of cam and rockers if you go used. You need to match the code on the back of the cam.

You can get the rockers from Fastlane or any of the Worldpac resellers.

If you go new, you are supposed to replace the cam and rockers as a set. Stu Ritter, a long-time tech with his own bulletin board, ran an independent shop for many years, and strongly advises everyone to get cams from Mercedes (ouch).

The cam comes out by removing the sprocket - be sure to mark the chain and sprocket, removing the rockers, unbolting the bearings from the head and lifting it off with the bearings.

I had the same problem. Got the camshaft ( same side as yours ), MB parts dept and my Indie said it is always the right side, rocker arms and oiler kit at http://www.**************.com/ . You have to call them for a price but I think the new cam was $194. The mechanic was very happy with the quality of the cam. Very special caution removing the bolts that secure the cam tower to the Aluminum Head.
