No xmission dip stick????

Receintly acquired a 97 SL-320, low miles, etc. Dropped the bottom engine cover to have a look and noticed some xmission fluid around the hose from radiator. Went to check the fluid level and found "NO" dip stick. Owners manual confermed the fact this model has no dip stick. Is there a kit to install same, or how does anyone ever know when the fluid might be low??? I am a DIY'er on most things shy of engine/xmission work. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance, Ron

I have the same situation on my ML320.......If the SL shares the same drive train.....it seems they are filled for "life" There is a ton of info on changing the fluid on the ML forum.

There isn't a dipstick installed on 722.6 transmissons. They have fill for life oil and a workshop dipstick is used to check oil level. The dipstick can't be left in the gearbox dipstick tube becasue it's too long.

You can purchase one from your dealer or online.

Measuring the transmission fluid level on the 722.6 tranny is not really a DIY job. It has to be measured at precisely 80 deg C; at the dealer they use their special machine to make sure they get it right. There are a few posts here about; you will find them if you do a search on "722.6 transmission".
