107 Front Fender Question

There is rust on the top front of my driver's side fender...over the headlight area. It seems to have rusted through to a degree....actually looks like there are several (at least 2) layers of metal. Is there a metal sub fender or something underneath?

Any explanation is appreciated.

The headlight bucket is below the sheet metal. It is part of the fender assebly and may be what you are seeing. I just finished parting out a 73 slc that sat under a tarp for ten years in Pennsylvania. It had extesive rust damage in that same area.

Thanks for the reply, BConrad. Is the bucket removable? Thanks again.

This seems to be a very common place for rust-through with these cars, and with that lamp bucket in the way, makes what might have been an easy repair difficult!

Both my front fenders are bubbling paint there and wonder if replacing the fenders might be the best way to deal with it in the end anyway? BB

have you removed the headlights to see how bad the rust is behind them? The fenders will include new light buckets, so if they are rusted out it may help you make your decision. Like they always say on this forum: The rust you see is only a third of what is there.

Agreed!

Yes there is heavy rust to the light buckets, as well as everywhere else too!
But in my case, b_ _ do may be the most practicle thing to do, moneywise!

The cost to repair and replace everything to like "new condition" in this car would greatly exceed a return value!

My concept is to nurse it along for as long as is practicle! It is a good preview for a future 107, one that is in truely fine shape. BB

Here you can see the rust at the top of the pic. it's total about 3 1/2" long. Figure I'll have to cut bigger hole to clean and prep the top of the bucket which is underneath.
