1980 450 sel transmission swap

I have and throughly enjoy my baby but the gas prices have
brought me to the point where I would like to consider swapping
my trans for a 380 vintage 4 speed auto. If would solve the
low end acceleration lag inherent with a 3 speed and provide
a bit of overdrive with the 4 speed.

Anyone know if they bolt up.

And, along the same topic.

Good question, I'm interested in what the experts say here too. I wouldn't do anything until my current tranny died, but I am curious if anyone markets a Turbo 700 GM trans swap kit to use in a model 107 eng.117.985 They are sturdy transmissions with a smooth shifting times plus the overdrive, which would have to result in less engire wear and improved mileage. Or a five or six speed manual, I'm sure it's been tried, I'd like to hear about what kind of results you pioneers have had, and how difficult the jobs were. I really don't feel it's necessary to have to learn all my mistakes the hard way. It just seems there has to be some options for the three speed automatic Benz installed in the gas V8's sent to America in the late 70's. Sorry about hijacking the thread, Pls. read the previous posting first. Thanks.

Dunno where you're getting your information, but the 4-speeds that come in the 380's have a 1:1 ratio in 4th - no overdrive. I believe that the primary benefit of this transmission is a more respsonsive first gear start to make up for the lost torque of the smaller engine.

I haven't seen any manual conversions for these cars. One of the problems is that they were never offered with a clutch, so there are no flywheels or pilot bushings available. So it would require a lot of parts beyond the trasnmission to pull off a manual conversion.

I just love to hear you guys talk. The price of my 280SL just went up. I've got the 4spd auto and I get great mileage. You can't beat a motor that was originally built for $5 a gallon gas.

Everything I have read says any attempt to swap in Amercian drivetrain parts is ridiculously expensive to the point of being unfeasible. They are just totally different basic design philosophies.
