560SL Exhaust Questions
Has anyone modified the exhaust of a 560Sl to give it a bit of rumble. Not real load...just sort of a V8 rumble instead of the dead silence it now has?
I was actually thinking about simply taking off the rear muffler.

Relus Exhaust
I have a Remus exhaust mounted on my 450SL very easily. It doesn't go (much) louder, but much more deeper in sound. You get the americans V8 sound. I'm very happy with it for only 700 euros. I don't have a ref number, but if I find it, I'll let you know.

Exhaust (muffler) changes.
I have changed the exhaust systems on 3 Mercedes both to get a little "noise" and to improve performance and gas milage. All were successful. A 1979 450SLC, removed all back to the "cat's", replaced with pipe and euro-glass. These glass packs turned out to be a little noisy but OK
A 1988 300 SE, it sounded like a sewing machine, a muffler with a little bit of "tone" took care of that A 1988 560 SEC, removed the rear muffler, the intermdiate mufflers and the resonator. Put in pipes and glass packs similar to what people used on the old muscle cars. Sounds great, upped my gas milage almost 4 mpg. Heads do turn when I go by, not too many people have heard a MB "back down". I see you are from Tuscon, I lived for 25 years in the Phoenix area. If you have emission testing there be careful and leave the cats. Also pay attention to whereyour exhausst sytem oxygen sensors ore located. Good Luck |

I've been contemplating that modification to my 560 as well, specifically the rear muffler. No sense in driving a shiny classic with a rusty piece of pig iron hanging off the back of it I figure. As near as I can tell, as recently as a few years ago there were several stainless systems available for the 107, but I haven't found anything still in production. Performance Products used to advertise a stainless performance muffler for the 107s in their catalog and I was able to pry it out of them that it was made by Remus, but all the resellers I've contacted are out of stock. Eisenmann made a system as well, but I've had the same luck tracking it down as well - none. There is a company called Time Valve (www.timevalve.com) that makes stainless sytems, but they're just replicas of the stock system. Probably not what you're looking for either. The best lead I've gotten was from a company called Status Imports (www.statusimports.com). One of their sales guys sent me a link to a supersprint system that they're going to be importing. Looks pretty sweet. That reminds me, I haven't harassed them about it for a month or two. I'll let you know if I find out anything useful...

my brother cut the rear muffler off of his 62 220s, and it sounded great! then he had someone make a tailpipe, and the sound changed a bit, its not quite as nice a note and maybe louder? so the next step is to put a glasspack in place of the rear muffler. the center resonator has been kept

I was going to send you a pic (don't know how to attach) of a muffler I have installed. I can't remember the name but, it sounds deep and rich. Not too loud. It has dual chrome extensions coming out the back. The biggest problem I have with it is it sits down from the cutout in the back pan.
