fuel syst diagram

I just bought an 84 280SL,,,It didnt have a fuel pump

I bought one but it still doesnt quite want to start.

If I pour some gas down the throat, it will run for a bit, then dies

I got a few books on how to diagnose it, but the parts it refers to, I have no clue where they are or what they look like,

example, fuel mixture valve,,,it says to plug it,,,blah, blah, blah, NO GOOD if I dont know where it is or what it looks like

What I need is a decent diagram of the fuel system components, anybody have any suggestions?

thanks in advance

ron

There is a Haynes manual for the 123 body "gas twin cam" (like the 280E) that covers the engine and fuel system.

Is the pump working when you turn on the key and when you crank the starter? You can put your hand on it and see if it buzzes.

Is fuel getting to the engine? Unhook the return line, stick it in a container, run the pump and see if you get about a pint in 40 seconds.

Hey CT,,,IM gonna check that tommorrow.

I figured since its a new pump, how could it not be working,,well, I should know better.

I got ahold of the previous owner, and got some good info on the car.
It has just over 200 clicks on it, but he tells me the engine was rebuilt around 180,000, tranny recently rebuilt, ac redone

took the plugs out and a little black soot, so I guess if it was recently rebuilt, just running a bit rich.

It had been in a rear end accident, someone plowed into the guy on the freeway, and slid up under him, dented the trunk from underneath, broken tail light, not much else,,,,

anyways, Im gonna try what you said, and will get back and post the results, thanks for your reply.

The soot probably came from your starting with raw gas!

If you send me an email, I have a K-Jet overview that I can send via return email.
