Today I installed new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter and also replaced the thermostat too. Did oil and filters back in November.
I really didn't know what to expect since I haven't had weather since I bought the car back in November. I'd bet it had been ten years since the last tune up for this high milage 1980 450SL! Previous owners completely neglected this car and ran it into the ground!
Even with an aged ignition system, improperly set fuel adjustments, this car has started instantly every time but ran very rough, and the temp never got to 80c, so the fuel system couldn't settle out.
When I hit the key to start, it started with about 1/2 turn of the starter motor and ran quieter and smoother than I could have wished for to my surprise. As it warmed up, much faster than before, it settled just above 80c and then the RPMs began to drop from 1200 to around 800 and stayed there.
With all that done, had lunch and then started to return refurbished interior parts reinstalled. Things are beginning to take shape!
The only disappointment today was to discover they sent me the wrong side grille screen and will send that back for exchange. I'm still looking for a right side grille "wing" the chrome centers for each screen. Found a supplier for trunk seals $29

I'll post some pictures next week if the weather's good!..........
