Readout codes for SL600
CEL (Check Engine Light)came on and I pulled the codes from the diagnostic module.
Here is what I get: 17-data exchange malfunction between individual controll modules 34-??? 45-??? and from the ABS w/ASR controll module 13-stop lump switch(ASD/ASR) My question is what the code 34 and 45 means and anyway I can get the DTC manual for V12 so I can read the 'blinks' in the future. Thank You all for the great forum!!!

sl-600 gibberish
The real wonder is that these POS thrown together 'systems' ever work at all. The system integration is horrible and the NHTSA should force a recall and real fix. The car relies on a Car Area Network (CAN) and redundant functions in individual modules that check, cross check, verify, and reverify many measured values with 'factory' values stored in ROM look up tables. If one of the values measured fall outside the factory set tolerance range--you get a shutdown, limp-in mode, or other failure. The error codes you read say that something didn't pass muster. The problem is that unless the fault is 'hard' and stays there--the error message is unreliable and may just be a stray fluke event. The CAN is not nearly as reliable as the internet when it comes to transmitting the digital data--a single bit error can bring it down.
Then to really screw things up--Germany passed a law requiring manufacturers to 'take back and recycle' all their products. This led MBZ and Bosch to experiment with bio-degradable wiring insulation (honest) Bosch built wiring harnesses in Volvos, MBZ, BMW, etc are failing left and right--and have been for over 10 years. Each of the 4 Volvo dealers in Houston have a stock level of 4 of EACH engine compartment wiring harness for each model--and they often stock out late in the week! The SL-600 is plagued with wiring harness failures due to the excessive heat in the engine compartment leading to early 'decomposition' of the wire insulation inside the bundles. The insulation on the wires turns to dust and shorts result. The decomposed insulation is also corrosive to the copper, eating it up like hydrochloric acid would. Unfortunately, your nonsense error codes MAY be the result of this inevitable decay--or they may have been caused by the heavy electro-magnetic bombardment the earth got hit with late January (really--we got slammed with monumental high energy shock wave from a newly found kind of star explosion. If it had been within 100 light years it would have fried us all.) Good luck Last edited by Kebowers; 02-20-2005 at 12:22 AM. Reason: spelling |

Code 34 is for a defective oxygen sensor -- the one on the left side just before the catalytic converter (G3/3). Code 45 is for a bad or missing signal from the left "CMP" sensor at the front of the left camshaft. If you want specifics for testing these, post back.
If you send me an email, V12, I can email you a manual for a Baum scan tool which includes the codes. Better still may be to get a copy of the R129 technical manuals on DVD. M-B sells it for $150, though there are illegal copies available for about $30. |

Thank you bobterry99
Got your email...thanks for the code reader.
I would love to find out how to check the 'CMP' sensor and O2 sensor. Please post here so all others with the same or similar issues can learn at the same time. And another ? I might need the top harness, since most of the wires are 'cooked' and the insulation brakes,I don't even wanna touch it. Any idea where to get it?I can get dealer 20% discount. Anywhre else? Thank you in advance.

Phil here at Mercedesshop can probably get the wiring harnesses for a good price. And Caliber Motors in Anaheim Hills has discounted prices too. And some dealers will replace it as part of "good will" for nothing at all, apparently.
For further diagnosis of the CMP sensor and oxygen sensor, I recommend first checking four systems for codes: the left and right fuel injection control modules and the left and right ignition control modules. These are sockets 5, 4, 18, and 17 of your diagnostic connector, respectively. |
