Fuel pump quits

If I drive of without letting my 1973 450SL warm up about 5-10 minutes on cold mornings it will die after about 100 yards. After 5-10 minutes it will restart. Is this normal?

This sounds like an odd case of the fuel pump relay going bad. That, or a bad fuel pump is about the only cause of a problem like this.
