Valve Seals/Guides

My 83-380sl smokes when cold on decelleration (sometimes so bad it chokes the engine). Is it worth to redo the seals or should the heads come off to redo the guides aswell(like the MB dealer sugested)?. Engine has 135000mi on it.
Thanks for helping
Otto W. Coers

I understand smoke when cold to be loose guides that expand and seal better as the engine warms up. You can try just the seals but it's at least 50-50 that you need guides. You can wiggle the valve stems to check the guides with the springs out.

You have to use an air compressor to keep the cyl under pressure, this keeps the valves from falling into the combustion chamber.
Does anyone know where I could rent a MB valvespring compressor or, if the guides turn out to need replacing, a good repair shop in British Columbia, Canada??
Thanks,
Otto
