R129 Replace Door Speakers

Can anyone post instructions on how to get into the door panel of my 1991 500SL to replace the speakers?

Thanks in advance!

I'd like to know where you got your speakers and for how much?

My driver's side woofer (if you want to call it that) seems to have a loose voice coil (buzzes or rattles at low volumes). I'd just as soon replace it too.

Well from the information I've gathered, the door speakers are a 3.5" and 6.5".

Both top mounted and have only 1.5" of depth --which makes finding a replacement a bit difficult

For the 3.5" I have a set of JL Audio TR350-CX on the way.

For the 6.5", I'm trying to find a set of Blaupunkt ODx652 which proving to be a bit of a challange

For my head unit, I bought an Alpine CDA-9855 that should arrive soon as well.

Finally, for my sub, I have a JL Audio 10w6v2 in a sealed QLogic Box with a Kenwood 600watt amp that will sit in the Jumpseat area.

Right now I'm still searching for the Blaupunkt speakers, but I've bought everything else.

I hope this helps!

I don't know if the '95 SL has the same panels as my '97 but I bought the 6.5" speakers at Frys. I had to fight with the guy there since he was sure only another Bose speaker could be used. When he finally gave in and showed me the 6.5" drivers, I picked the cheapest two way speakers I could find at 4 ohms. My reasoning was that I didn't want to pay big bucks for speakers where I might have to cut the wire for the tweeter since the 6.5" speakers are, I guess, the woofers. Well, I put them in and instead of the incessant buzzing, I got real music and it sounds great! I never did cut the tweeter wire. Total cost, $37 dollars since they were open boxed.

Those Blaus are pricey! Is that the OEM driver that MB uses, or are your stepping up the gear?

Drewmwillis

The JL seem a great choice form the specs, with 28.5Hz Fs and it's low Vas suggest a reasonable enclosure size - it should fit in the rear fine.

I'm also keen on carrying out a similar exersise but euro cars have seats and so I need to investigate how to get 'within' the rear enclosed section.

I'm very interested in your project so please do keep us informed.

Thanks
Lea

Change of Plans

Well, trying to get the Blaupunkts was nearly impossible, so I'm taking a chance with a set of Infinity Kappa 63.5i 6-1/2" 3-way Speakers

Though the mounting depth is over 2", the car toys website claims this will be a "direct fit" in the car, so we'll see how that goes -- I might have to get creative with the mounting.

Also, the 3.5" JL's were backordered, so I changed my order to Infinity Reference 3002cf 3-1/2" 2-way Speakers

I was able to get both sets from Crutchfield for a hair under $200.

We'll see what happens!

Are you going to disconnect the high frequency driver from the Blaupunks?
