'74 450 SL Won't Start after removing center console
I just got a hand-me down 450 SL (California emissions, unfortunatley) and took out the inst cluster and center console to clean it up and try to get the air path controls fixed up. I had to remove the shift lever to get the console out. After putting everything back together, it won't start. Yes, the battery is charged. I hear the fuel pump come on and a small relay clicks deep in the center of the dash somewhere. I know about the key switch only turning to start once per full twist. I tried to move the shift lever in park to a different position and also start it in neutral, but that makes no diff. I have not tried to jump the solenoid yet. Is there an easy way to bypass the solenoid to test the starter? My best guess is that there is some misalignment now regarding the shift interlock. Where is it and how can I check it?
I was also planning to remove the annoying key-in-the-ignition buzzer. I see it has 3 wires and the connector on the ignition switch has 2. Will disconnecting the 3-wire connector at the buzzer affect anything else? I got some of the air paths cleared and connected and just dropped something down the defroster ducts!! So maybe all my work may be for nothing. I bet some flipper in there will now be jammed! Oh well. But my MAIN problem is that it will not start. Any ideas? Thanks, Scott |

'74 450 SL Won't Start - Addl Info...
Oh yea. I forgot to say that I pulled the seats and carpet, too. Are those two plugs under each seat part of the interlock or just buzzers??? I may not have hooked them up to the right plugs when I put the seats back in. I would like to jump them silent if possible.

Safety Belt
The safety belt has to be in service even if you just reach in and turn the key to start the 74-450SLC....You might have mixed up your plugs under the seat...Have you tried starting the car with the seat belt hooked together????Jim

I have not checked on my SL, but on my 123, there is a neutral switch on the transmission. If you dislodged the wires going to that, it would stop you from starting - Same is probably true of wires going to ignition switch.

'74 450SL wont start -- Still!
Thanks everyone for helping here. I'm a brand new owner and not sure why things seem to be so complicated...
Here is new info I just thought about!! I may have messed up the 3 wires that go to the buzzer behind the tach. The plug fell apart and I think I got it back correctly. The buzzer sounds when the key is inserted, so I got 2 out of three right. But there is a third wire that could go on a 4th pin, I wonder if it goes to this interlock! There seems to be a two-wire plug that goes into the back/side of the ignition switch. It doesn't help either way - in or out... Does anyone know the pin-out and wire colors for this darn key buzzer?? Jim, thanks. Yes, I tried to hook the plugs up the other way around. No diff. I checked the continuity and see the seatbelt opens the circuit when the buckle is inserted. I simulated that in both plugs with a jumper and neither allowed a start. In fact, I know that when I initially pulled the driver seat, the plug was not plugged in. So it worked before with nothing plugged in... Now the other wire/plug seems to go to some sensor in the seat-center. A weight sensor? I checked the car-side and it is an open circuit. I jumped it closed and hoped for starter noise. Nope! I tried both circuit conditions (open and closed) on both car-side plugs and still nothing. Then I tried moving the shift lever around in the park position and nothing still. Scott |

More 74 450SL wont start
And in another senior moment, I just remembered that I moved (read started and drove) the car back in the garage AFTER removing the seats. So that should rule out the seatbelt/seat wight sensors. It has to be in the dash buzzer or the gearshift interlock... Who wants to take bets? I am actually at even money, since I am at a loss of what to check now (aside from taking it to a shop.)
Does anyone have a wiring diagram or pin-out for the three pins (30 31b and 15 and the metal case) for that darned seatbelt buzzer? Quote:

Solved
Well, I finally verified all the logic in the relay that takes all the inputs from the seatbelt sensors. Found it to be faulty so I jumped out all circuits but the tranny interlock! Now I can usew the key to start her instead of the bypass button I put it!!
