'95 SL320 Hardtop will not lock

Hi,
My girlfriend is up in Washington D.C. picking up a hardtop she bought on eBay a couple of months ago for her 1995 SL320. She called me here in Georgia to tell me the roof fits fine but will not lock into place at the windshield. We went through the sequence as far as I could recall from memory. Lower the convertible roof, then the rollbar, place the roof in position then push the red roof button forward to lock.
Is there something we are forgetting, should the windows be up or down for instance? Is there a way for the roof to be locked manually?
I would be grateful for any advice. Thanks.
Colin.

Hi

I assume that the soft top locks without problems? Does the front soft top need significant 'pull down' force to achieve lock?

Make sure the windows are fully down.
Make sure engine is running - just in case of low battery voltage.

Try applying a little pressure simultaneously with pushing the button to the left then right of the hard top front where the locks are. If the roof locks with this assistance the locks may need simply adjusting.

According to MB data, the maximum wear at the center of the soft top or hardtop latches is 5mm. Take a vernier caliper and measure the difference between the locking edge of the latch and the center and replace if necessary, though I suspect adjustment of the locking mechanism would probably suffice and I'm pretty sure you wouldn't see any wear on the hardtop latches - no-one surely regularly takes the top on and off!

That's as much as I know - best wait for the 'gurus' for more info..

Lea

Thanks for the info. The soft top works perfectly. I'll call her today and pass on your suggestions. If that does not work I've found the local Mercedes dealer up there which is only 4 miles away from where she's staying.
Thanks again,
Colin.

Thanks again for the advice, Lea. I went round to my girlfriend's place today to see what the problem was with the hardtop. The rear pins clamped properly but the front would initially pull down then pop back up. She drove it back from D.C. to Atlanta like that and naturally it rained the whole trip!
I found 2 holes behind the sun visors which access manual locking devices. They look like Torx or Allen head holes but I could not be sure. Almost all of the toolkit is missing from her car, and I believe there is a little Allen/Torx wrench which is used for this purpose. Anyone out there know what size it is?
Colin.

The top tool you are missing is part number 1295810066

It has a 6 mm hex on one end and a 10 mm open end wrench on the other.

My bet is that the posts on the replacement top will need adjusting to fit her car. The mis-fit is probably all that is preventing it from latching.

The procedure for manually operating the latches is in the owner's manual.

The latches are two-stage in operation. Meaning it takes two clicks to manually latch/unlatch them. You should click each side to the first notch before proceeding to the second notch. I hope this description makes sense.

If I recall correctly, the left and right latches operate in reverse rotation from each other.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the advice, speace. I just saw the tool up for auction on eBay, now I know what I need to fix her top. I have a set of metric Allen keys and will try using the 6mm key meantime, but I will get her the proper tool too.
Colin.
