Convertible Top Installer Recommendations

The plastic window in my '94 SL is cracking on one of the side seams. I went to a body shop, in Benicia, that also does upholstery and soft tops. The estimate for a new top ( both pieces), and not even a German canvas top, came to $2400. Just the top was $1200. Unbelievable!!
Can anyone recommend a shop that does convertible tops in the North Bay area? Any leads would be immensely appreciated. Thanks!

I just purchased a top for my 1984 500SL from aabestco.com This blue german canvas top was less than $300.00. However, it did not have the tan underlining like my original top. It was black and when I contacted them they replied that this was a special and only came with the black underside. The tan underneath is $419.00. I wish they had clearly stated such. Anyway, has anyone installed one of these tops and how does it look and fit? I have the option of returning the top and would like some input before doing so.
Hans-Ulrich, sorry I can't answer your question. I too will soon be looking for an installer here in eastern NC.
Thanks,
Mike

The headliner on my top is in perfect shape, but the $2400 quote didn't even include that.

Try www.prestigeautotops.com. Current price is 339.00 US. Excellent quality. They are in England, but shipping was only around 25.00. Came quick. Looks original to me. Why not install yourself. Not that big a deal and instructions come with the top, and are also available other places online in addition to the CD.

ljmauricio, I like what I see at that site. I think I will return my top and order from them. My new top does not even have the wire separating the rear window. Did you install yours? I have downloaded instructions on doing this but with my luck I'll screw it up! Thanks for the info!

The vinyl covered wire separating the rear window was not included in the top I got from them, however, the side tensioning wires were included and threaded thru the top. Made things easy there. Yes, I installed mine. Go slow, follow the directions, a helper makes things infinetly easier. Good Luck.

Gentlemen-- Please check out this link:

http://www.prestigeautotrim.com/usa/usa/tops/mercedes_hoods.htm

I have never used this place but I found it on the Internet -- the reason I am pointing it out is for the "headliner" kit they show (offered for the 107 cars) when you scroll down on this page -- I was always interested in doing this, but never got around to it. They also have tops for the 129 cars at substantially less than was quoted in the first post. So check it out. (this may be the same or related to the site noted above!)

Let us know how this is if you do it.

Thank you for all your leads. I'll check out the websites mentioned, and at this point, since I only need the window portion of the top, I may try to install that myself. I am assuming that the top comes as two seperate pieces?
