Gears Stripped on Adjustable Steering Column

Now that the ignition switch is on its way to a fix, I need to ask for some help
in repairing the up / down actuator or gears that raise & lower the steering wheel.

As an earlier post suggested moving the wheel would sometimes cause enough of a deflection in the ignition cable harness to cause the starter to function. My cars previous owner took that fix to the max and now it sounds
like the gears are stripped.

I lost an email from a 500sl owner in Alaska who had a complete column fron a salvage yard. One of my close friends is a tool and dye maker with his own machine shop and is willing to make me a set if I take the gears out.
Since the dash, cluster, and ignition key assembly is out I thought I would take a shot at removal with some of your advise.

Any and all contributions are greatly appreciated !
dan
P.S. If you have a gear problem let me know and I may be able to have a few
extra sets made since MB does not sell them.

Dan,
Did you see this post? Maybe ask him if he has a steering column. Good luck, and good job because you are fixing it right!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mercedes 1992 500SL. I purchased this car to take the engine, transmision, and other parts I needed for my running SL. This SL is pretty much stripped with the exception of the Black leather seats(in great condition) soft top, rear clip,(including all rear lights & covers) trunk, driver door, side mirror on passenger door, stearing wheel, shifter, wood trim, 3 AZEV chrome rims, and other misc.parts under the hood (There is VERY little under hood). Most of the remaining parts will fit in the 1992-2002 500 SL's. This car has parts valued much higher than the price I'm asking. I just dont have the room to store it! The car is located in Burbank, California aprox. 1 mile from Burbank airport. I will deliver it to you free!(25 miles max.). I can e-mail you additional if your interested or free to call me at (818)884-8600.(cell)
