Well, new ignition points fixed my jumpy tach! But the car now runs bumpy all around!! So I dropped by the local merc fixit guy down the block and he hooked it up to his magic machine and said, hey, you are only running on 6 of the 8! Big surprise. One plug was all oiled up, too.
So I give, he is going to go thru the whole thing and see what else might be amiss in there. Not sure of the cost, but parts permitting, it should be back on an even keel in one day. I sure will miss having to mess around under my hood every nite! And wonder how she will run the next AM... I'll post the results next week when I return from the camping trip I can't get out of... The Long Saga Continues
A can of Sea Foam in the tank and new iggy points and she is better. Sort of.. The tach jumpiness is totally gone now - must have been the points. But she is now missing on a couple of cylinders. Pulling the injector plug wires one at a time and watching the RPMs told me that two of them are not firing all the time. I thought Sea Foam would clean that up, not make it worse. Or maybe this is electrical after all. Looks like I need to pull the injectors and see whats up there... Thankfully, this will be a long weekend!

If you can get hold of a fuel pressure gauge that shows bar pressure, you might want to check control pressure vs system pressure as the car warms up. The symptoms that you have coupled with the fact that it's intermittant makes me think the warm up compensator is acting up.

This is D-Jet, not K-Jet!

Check the fuel injection points.
I have a 73 450slc. My car ran just like yours. I tried everything until I read in this forum about the Fuel injection points deep in the base of the distributor (not the ignition points on top of the dist). I pulled the dist unscrewd the module holding the 4pack of points, cleaned the module with solvent and the carb cleaner. After I put it back together, It no longer ran rich at idle, it idled smoother, it stopped running rough until fully warm. Turns out that oil gets on the 4pack points and it won't run right until the dist gets warm inside and the oil thins out. Don't know why nobody mentioned it before me. I'm a newbe to the forum although I have 3 450sl's.

Earlybird, you beat me to it! Yes, Captain Scott, by all means pull out the injection points off of the distributor base, and clean them,
Have you considered it might be sticky injectors? Grab some D-Jet injectors and swap them out (the line is pressurized, so be sure and let some of it relieve pressure, not in your face!) Also, did you check timing (hookup on #1 cylinder), what are you seeing at idle with vacuum connected/disconnected? Might have a vacuum line problem with the distributor advance system? There is a computer with knob under your passenger kickpanel this adjusts lean/richness, as well as the idle air control valve right next to the idle control valve. Are you getting good idle readings currently? This was one of the good reasons I made the jump to CIS. My '75 D-Jet SL was a pain in the a**! David |

I had similar problem with a 74 SL also. I cleaned the distibutor points but it did not help. My problem was the wiring from the distributor to the plugs. There is a four wire plug connector on the way from the dist. to plugs. This was all green and oxidized making poor and intermittent contact so that I lost power to two cylinders at the same time. After buffing this up with a small Dremel, problem was solved for me. For what it's worth.

I must be slipping!! Sorry for not posting my results in this thread.
In October I replaced the Trigger Points and that solved (almost) all my problems. Keep searching and you will learn from our journeys! For now, I am tracking an intermittent miss at higher RPMS. I suspect it is the distibutor points and will likely go with Petronix and a high voltage coil. Scott
