Why Panzer?

Probably a dumb question, but I've seen these cars referred to as Panzers. Why is that?

Mine certainly doesn't drive like a tank.

why?

The sl is supposed to stand for sport LIGHT. Before 1972 they were but after 1972 they were rather heavy. Anything but sport light. Built more like a tank. Like a german Panzer to be exact.Hope thi clarifys it for you

Mercedes actually designed and engineered the Panzer tank in WWII
At least according to the History channel

"They called it der Panzerwagen. The "armored car", as it translated from the Teutonic tongue, wouldn't seem to be a very dignified name for an automobile that's become one of the most coveted status symbols of our times. But those in Mercedes-Benz engineering who coined the moniker for the new 350SL had a point. Compared with the lovely, svelte 280SL that it was to replace, the 350SL did indeed look brutishly impregnable. "

A quote from the now famous Road and Track article on the 107...

"According to the Stuttgart code, the letter S might stand for either Sport or Super, and the L stood for Leicht (meaning light in weight) more often than it stood for Luxus (which, of course, stands for everything imaginable and nothing that can hurt)..."
