R129 Instrument Cluster Face

Well, they told me to be careful, but I didn't listen. I have put a crack in the clear face of my instrument cluster. How I did it is pitiful and embarrassing.

Does anyone have a fried or otherwise incapacitated instrument cluster or just the clear they would sell me?

Any idea if it is the same as from a 126? I have one I can give you for postage if it is.

broken inst cluster face

Your 'best' bet is to try and find a 'dead' cluster cheap and swap the part. You really don't wanna buy a new cluster assembly--mega $$$.

Other possibility is a 'model shop' (industrial stuff) taht can take your old face, use it as a'templat', and make/mold a new oe for you. Maybe $50?

I did the same thing and wound up paying about $370 for a new piece at the dealer. Parts guy says that their techs break them all of the time, so they keep lots of spares...

Watch ebay. Search "mercedes sl" or "merecedes 129". Youll see them on there now and again.

Carson356,
I'm certainly interested in talking to you about it. If we make a deal, I can drive down and pick it up. I am just up the road.

Great, Ray. Thanks very much for you help on that one. I installed chrome rings used on new models and put the new face in. It looks great. Let me know if I can help you some time.

Mike/et al

Any tips for removing the cluster? I will make the required right angled tools of course, but today I noticed that my digital temperature sensor illumination has failed and so wonder how NOT to break the fascia.

I've watched the video on MBNA (very useful) but just wondered if there were any further tips.

Also, I note you added chrome rings - was this easy? Where did you purchase them from? How much did they cost?

Also, which year were they introduced by the way?

Cheers
Lea

Ebay for the chrome rings. Usually around $35.00. They are easy to install. I believe that MB started putting them on the car in '99.

All the gauges are ok it's just the lamps - but I'll bear your offer in mind Carson, thanks.

These chrome rings must be purchased from somewhere before the ebay seller's advertise? - maybe Performance Products? I'll take a look.. although I would prefer a UK source to minimise shipping costs.

Cheers
Lea
