Car Cover - Use a Fitted or Generic cover for a W107?

I have a 84 380sl. I'm getting tired of washing my car (it doesn't help my neighbours kid me about either) so I'm thinking of getting a car cover to reduce this task. I'm not sure on whether to a pay the additional amount and purchase a fitted car cover or get a generic car cover that fits a number of cars which are approximately the same size.

Also, I'm confused how a custom fit cover would fit a covertible. I presume they are fitted on the basis of the top being raised. If so, how good a fit do you get when the top is down?

Any input from car cover owners would be appreciated.

Thanks

Point to remember...any dirt under a cover will scratch the paint...even more so if its outdoors and wind will buffet the cover.

I have been using the standard fitted cover from the dealer for years.

It may be a matter of personal preferance but I like the fitted cover a lot better. It completely covers the car and it takes one hell of a breeze to blow it off. Even on windy days, it usually stays completely on without a problem.

I never put the cover on the car when it is dirty and keep the cover itself clean by washing it periodically.

The standard covers do a miserable job on the 107's because they are larger, but don't have a long enough hood. And they flap like crazy if the wind blows.

I have a cover that I put on my 560 with the top down - it sort of drapes the interior. It's OK unless it rains.

My main gripe with the standard fitted cover is that if it gets dirty, it leaves black marks all over the car when it rains. It has to be kept really clean otherwise you start running into this problem if it (the cover) does not get washed for a little while.
