soft top operation 91 500SL
I saw post that said if the battery voltage is poor, meaning battery is weak and need a new one, the soft top will not work fully.
my battery is weak and my soft top operation is quirky, I seen it go up and down and sometimes not at all. Does the voltage matter? seem to think so. 1991 SL 500 119K miles - the head turner, but sucks to maintain 2005 Acura TL - my reliable one, love the bluetooth 2002 Mitsu Montero 2001 540i - bye bye to a new home Last edited by tvenu; 11-05-2005 at 10:21 PM. |

The voltage is indeed important and so if your battery is suffering then make sure you start the engine and run it whilst operating the top.
My batt is around 1.5 years old and occasionally doesn't operate the hood until the car's started. I seem to recall the red top switch just blinks to warn of low voltage. Lea

Well in the UK the 'hood' is the soft top, not the bonnet (above the engine bay) - also known as rag top - but that's us Brits for ya

I was right FYI
The soft top works flawlessly now with a new battery, the voltage on the old one which did start the car was not enough to power the top up and down.

Strange eh - but true. Mine also cranks over and starts effortlessly, but doesn't operate the hood on occassion...
The hood needs 11V minimum. Glad you resolved the issue. Lea

Last year, due to a belt failure, my battery was pretty low. While the car was in I asked my mechanic to put the hardtop on and he had problems putting down the soft top. He was about to start working on it when I suggested charging the battery. That fixed the problem and it has never occured again.
